The Digital World Continuous to Evolve and Expand

Computers, information networks, and new media are three components of our digital world that continue to evolve and expand. As the market for new technology grows, the number of jobs available grows too.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics recently published its redesigned Occupational Outlook Handbook for 2012-2013. One of the updates they made was adding more profiles for computer-related occupations, including: computer network architect, web developer, network and computer systems administrators, and database administrators. The BLS also reports that employment for computer and math- related occupations is projected to grow by 22 percent from 2010-2020.

If you are looking for a long-term career path, studying computers or new media may be perfect for you. Here are a few of the qualities that are necessary for a career as a Computer Network Engineer, New Media Programmer, Computer Animator, or Web Designer.

    Interest in Technology

Do you like learning new skills and concepts? Are you a technological trendsetter? An individual interested in computer-related occupations, must be a creative problem solver. If you are hoping to pursue a career in Network Engineering, Programming, Design or Animation, you should have an interest in gathering data, learning new skills, and working in a team environment.

    Knowledge of Hardware and Software

It is essential to know that behind every program, design, network, or animation there’s a set of software and hardware that must be mastered first. To succeed in computer-related fields, you must be able to understand the physical components of a network, knowledge of programming languages, as well as be able to program or use software to design and built products. For example, Computer network engineers are responsible for the network security and data storage of local-area and wide-area networks.

    Ability to Solve Problems

Being able to work in a team environment with fellow designers, engineers, programmers, and project managers to solve problems or to implement a new product is one of the most important skills for a computer-related career. For example, a computer network engineer will have to determine the best methods for setting up clients’ networks that are efficient and effective. A web designer will have to determine the best user-centered design and technique for developing websites or mobile apps.

It’s important to remember that behind every network, application, website or mobile app there is an end-user relying on your product to communicate their business goal and objective. The ability to solve problems and analyze potential flaws before the product gets to the hands of the end-user is the key to a successful career in any computer-related field.
