Not all states require Dental Assistants to be licensed but completing a Dental Assisting Program will give you an edge over possible competitors. Even states that do not require a license do suggest completing a training program. A successful Dental Assistant requires hands-on training and experience that only a Dental Assistant Training Program can offer. Read on to learn how completing a Dental Assisting program can benefit you.

What is a Dental Assistant?

A dental assistant helps with all daily tasks in a dental office. They help with scheduling and greeting patients, collecting basic health information and x-rays, assisting with dental procedures as needed, and also sterilizing equipment and preparing exam rooms for the next patient. Dental Assistants work closely with the dentist to ensure patients have the best experience in their office. Dental Assistants may work in dental, pediatric dental, oral surgery, endodontics or orthodontics offices.

Do You Need a License to Become a Dental Assistant?

In many states, you do not need a license to become a dental assistant. Furthermore, becoming a Dental Assistant does not require a two- or four-year college degree, but some states do require the completion of a Dental Assistant Training Program. These programs will teach the basics of dental care and the skills necessary to be a valuable employee in a dental office. A good program with experienced instructors will provide you with the knowledge and hands-on training you need to succeed as a dental assistant.

Some states allow for training on the job under the supervision of a licensed dentist who is willing to take on all liability. The trouble with training from one dentist is the quality and the breadth of the training. This may cause problems if you desire to move to a new employer, as you may not have received the training they expect their employees to have.
